6th January 2017 – Sixty Second Meeting

  • The Minutes and Resolutions of the previous meeting were approved.
  • It was reported that there were 178 victims as at 6 January 2017, according to the figures on the National CJD Surveillance Unit website. However, Fieldfisher were aware of 184 victims. By the end of this meeting, the Trustees had considered 183 of the claims submitted to date. The Trustees had considered a total of 409 claims for £5,000 Psychiatric Injury, 217 claims for Particular Emotional Hardship and 45 claims for Particular Financial Hardship.
  • No new claims had been made for the Trustees to consider at the meeting.
  • £41,602,946.22 had been paid in compensation by the date of the meeting, £15,080,834.25 had been paid for costs, expenses and taxes, which included £5,473,374.20 in relation to Charles Russell’s fees (inc VAT), £695,758.10 in relation to Fieldfisher’s fees (inc VAT), £3,581,985.89 to Irwin Mitchell’s fees (inc VAT) and £278,255.44 in relation to other solicitors’ fees and expenses.
  • The Trustees considered whether the simplification of the Scheme agreed at the previous meeting had succeeded in reducing the administration costs associated to the Scheme. They agreed that this had been successful and agreed not to wind the Scheme at this time, although this would be kept under review.
